Custom Design & Prototype Fabrication of Miniaturized Fiber Optic Splicers Used in the Communications Industry

Triumph Engineering Group Inc. worked closely with the client to engineer the design for the housing for this miniature fiber optic splicer for use in aerospace, communications, and military applications. Working with the client’s industrial designer, we designed & engineered the splicer to fit within limited space constraints, as outlined by client-supplied specifications with the use of CAD drawings. In addition, the splicer was designed to comply with U.S. Navy standards for impact resistance.

We began the design and mechanical engineering process by making a 3D model of the housing design to fit the splicer components based on the designer sketches. We created brackets and other components to serve as the interface between the internal components and the housing. Models were developed for the splicer and splicer controller housing and we assisted in prototype fabrication. We provided manufacturing documentation for each component, including machined, molded, and sheet metal parts made from aluminum, carbon steel, and plastic.

The overall splicer measured 93 mm long, 126 mm wide and 65 mm high. The controller measured 195 mm long, 121 mm wide and 44 mm high.
